You are the director and producer of Infernalrestraints.com and Hardtied.com. It's necessary a lot of time to produce these websites?.

X
.. Cyd Black
I throw myself into projects and let them consume my life. In that sense, it takes all the time in the world. I have a habit of vanishing for days or weeks when developing a new project. This tends to annoy my wife, friends and pets. I am fortunate as they periodically hunt me down, insist that I interact with them in a lifelike manner, make me sleep, feed them or feed me or put me in cars and take me places.

You were the director of contents and developments of websites as DeviceBondage, for Kink. How was it difficult to start?.

X

.. Cyd Black
DeviceBondage was far easier to start than I had anticipated. Here is an entirely fictionalized instant messenger dramatization loosely based on true events:
Cyd Black (Me): Hi I like to tie up girls and wear black and I wrote this site proposal plan. Would you care to look at it?.
KINK: Hello. Yes, we will look at it. In the meantime, please fly out and do a shoot for us. Matt put in a good word for you.
Me: Wow thank you! If the plan is too big or too expensive I can rewri...
KINK: No need. We liked your shoot. Your plan is approved and funded. When can you start? We'll pay for your relocation, salary, health, 401k, all that stuff.
Me: WHAT?!?!.
KINK: Hmm?.
Me: I mean uhm... yeah...that sounds cool. Would you mind giving me a minute to ask my wife if she'll move across the country with me?.
KINK: Yes. We'll pay to relocate your wife too. Upon your arrival, everything you asked for in your plan will magically appear.
Me: Seriously?.
KINK: Yes. Seriously. Even the two 30 inch monitors, although we're not quite sure why you need two.
Me: It's kind of difficult to do 3D design, play Warcraft and review video at the same time if you only have one. .
KINK: ...
Me: I was just kidding about the Warcraft thing.
KINK: ...
Me: I'll only play Warcraft after hours.
Me: Really, I swear.
KINK: Whatever. Just come out here and build us this site already.
So, I went out there and did.

You were a general manager of Intersec Interactive. Etc. What are your memories? Can you explain some anecdote to us?.

.. Cyd Black
Intersec is a raw art studio that looks exactly like what you think a raw art studio looks like. Exposed brick and cement. Paint splatter on the floor, plywood over the windows and props and machinery scattered everywhere. The building the studio is housed in is a filthy, dilapidated mess filled with other studios and located right underneath the loudest trains in New York City as they pass into Brooklyn. Basically it's perfect, except that it needs to be on the west coast of the USA, not the east coast of the USA, because the extremes of weather on the east coast are terrible for BDSM production.
Brent Scott (aka PD), the founder of the company, is about as unconventional, eccentric and truly gifted as an artist can get. The staff is capable but has a dark and twisted sense of humor and generally prides itself in being entirely unmanageable. The company is made up of strong creative personalities who are constantly clashing with each other. There is a lot of screaming. Mostly the staff screaming at each other. The models are usually gagged and can't scream at all.
We had people of all races, body types, religions and genders come through the studio including people who were surgically in between genders or had fully switched from one to another. No subject was off limits or too personal, rude or inappropriate. So the Jew would make fun of the Buddhist, the women would sexually harass the men, the white guy would make fun of the transgender, the transgender would mock the hippie chick and the black dude would crack white jokes and round and round it went. If you're not down with the vicious banter and scathing invectives...you're in the wrong place. Happily, though, I was in the right place. Some of the cut downs, retorts, and one liners that shot back and forth out of those peoples mouths were so psychologically vicious (and funny, really really funny...) that they were worthy to be spit out by Hannibal Lecter, Lenny Bruce or Lou Reed.
It was fun to watch the relentless drama like a TV show in the background. I try to avoid politics. I've been told I am hopelessly socially unaware. I believe that's probably true. That kind of sucks for me because as it turns out what you don't know actually can hurt you, and what I don't know likes to routinely stab me in the face.
During the insex period, it was pure insanity without the help of any LSD, partying or addition of any hangers on. This made the situation even weirder, because you'd really suspect hard drugs were an absolute pre-requisite in order to reach and appreciate the sheer quality and level of strange shit going on. Maybe it was just that everyone, myself included, was so weird already that no extra help was required when we were all let loose in a studio together.
I recommend watching the DVD documentary Graphic Sexual Horror (info at graphicsexualhorror.com ). It could have just as easily been titled "the making of insex" or something like that as it covers the subject quite well. The film is good in it's own right for entertainment, enlightenment and amazing visuals alone, even if you don't like bondage. It has been out for a few years now and there is a new special edition DVD with bonus footage as well. It captivates groups of totally normal people all the time. I never lie with movie recommendations and I give them out on twitter (@cydblack). Follow me if you want more.

Now, you are the director and producer of five web sites, cydblack.com , infernalrestraints.com, hardtied.com, realtimebondage.com and your twitter and facebook. How many people work in all the websites?.

X

.. Cyd Black
First, allow me to clarify that I am not the full time director of all these sites you listed above.
At Intersec, the sites InfernalRestraints, HardTied and RealTimeBondage are on-going collective projects that have rotating director roles. Whoever is handling a model during a particular shoot is usually also going to be the director on that project. Although I did act in a producer role for Intersec as a whole, I only actually directed the individual shoots I appeared in. Sister Dee, pd, Claire Adams or Damon Pierce have also appeared as directors on these sites.
I've seen Intersec employ anywhere from 5 to as many as 25 people at a time, scaling up and down to meet production requirements of a given project, but usually it's a small core crew of people who have dedicated their lives to BDSM and do all the work.
As for my own sites, I never work work on them. I really should put a portfolio up. I used to be the lead programmer for small interactive media and web development team for a Fortune 500 defense contracting company. Truth. Then I watched Fight Club and from then on I mentally checked out of corporate life. You'd think I'd actually get around to whipping out a web site for myself, but I'm always too busy working on projects for companies.
Right now I'm in the middle of putting together a business plan to build yet another production company and I just can't seem to generate enough motivation to switch gears to work on my ego or image. I also have a mental block against it I suppose. Self promotion has always been difficult for me. I know I need to do it for business reasons, but I really, really hate it. I'm all into Zen and Buddhism and Art and stuff and it seems to go totally against all of their principles. But isn't BDSM against some of those principles? Turns out no. I know because I watched a documentary on Netflix and it looked very official and produced by the History Channel.
The documentary told me the Buddha is said to have practiced forms of self bondage and self flagellation during his such for a guru before he realized everyone eventually had to become their own. Apparently the experience helped him find himself. So if you knock consensual BDSM, you're basically trying to argue to me that the path the Buddha took to self discovery was flawed, which I'm just plain not going to buy from you. I simply can't, especially considering what I've learned about life and human nature through BDSM, which essentially validates his methodology to me.
I never take anyone's word for it. Not even fucking Buddha. (Yes you can say "fucking Buddha" without it being offensive. Zen and Buddhism are all neat and contradictory like that. Q: What is Zen? A: Shit on a stick. Stuff like that.) Anyway, I always learn the hard (read: fun) way. Buddha said to question him anyway and experiment with your own ideas so I'm hoping I'm at least karma neutral by now. I'm trying pretty damn hard anyway. I try not to hurt people unless they specifically ask me to be hurt, in which case I assume they are on a journey of self discovery of their own like Buddha and then who the hell am I to judge them or stand in their way? Who the hell is anyone to judge them? In fact, why not help them instead?.
So yeah PR...it makes me want to vomit. I think I could stomach it if I hired someone else to do it and never had to see my own.

.. Christie Biel
How would you define bondage?.

X

.. Cyd Black
This is going to sound all sorts of academic, pretentious and sterile but changing writing styles is fun so here goes:
Like cooking, I conceive of bondage as a very useful skill that can be elevated to an art for with enough effort and practice. It grants the practitioner the ability to heighten and prolong sexual pleasure as well as extend the duration of intimate encounters. Who doesn't want to know how to do that? I don't know anyone who wouldn't want to know how to do that. I do know a lot of people that don't know that there is probably some facet of bondage or BDSM that they would actually enjoy if they tried it, even if it was just dressing in latex once in a while or seeing what wearing a cock ring feels like.
I would be upset to find out I went through life not knowing what kind of pleasure my body was able to feel naturally, without any drugs or hangovers or anything (ok maybe a few not too noticeable scars and burns here and there...) I mean look -- for those who don't know, it can feel better than heroin or ecstasy. Does that make an impression on you? And don't get the idea I'm a junkie either cause I said that - I'm not. I'm fanatical about safety. I'd really feel terrible if I injured a model due to negligence on my part. Suffice to say, I decided to put some time and energy into checking out the the extents of my mind, and at some point, got around to doing so, then decided to come back to reality (most of the time anyway) in order to actually get stuff done.
I think the goal of bondage play to slowly build up as much pleasurable sexual tension in your subject as possible for as long as possible so that the resulting orgasmic releases will feel like intense explosions of pure sexual ecstasy, far more intense than normally possible during conventional sex. The build of of sexual tension can be psychological, not just physical. In fact, that is what most people don't grasp. Bondage is often not about physical sensations but about creating and prolonging intensely pleasurable psychological states. People see whips and go - I dont wan't to be whipped by that! Hell no! But I doubt they are considering what the resulting rush of adrenaline and endorphins combined with some pleasurable sexual activity would feel like. Cause if they did, I bet they'd be doing it.
The elements of restraint, pain and discomfort can be viewed as tools that the practitioner uses to manage the level of sexual excitement in the subject, effectively deepening and intensifying the feelings at the same time without providing relief.
The bondage is simply necessary, as at a certain level of pleasure or pain or desperation for sexual release, most people lose control of themselves and will involuntarily convulse or thrash around. Without being restrained, there's no way to keep them put in order to deliver the level of pleasure they are seeking. Sometimes people try for heights of pleasure that literally require metal or full body encasement restraints to keep them in place because the pleasure and sexual tension is so immense that they would literally injure themselves or others otherwise. And they fucking get there. Naturally. No side effects, except losing some friends and family that you didn't really need since if they don't want to accept you for who you are, then they are no friends of yours.

.. Christie Biel
Why did you decide to dedicate professionally to bondage?.

X

.. Cyd Black
It was a combination of factors. I've always had a lifelong fascination with art, artists, psychology, philosophy, sexuality, music, literature, women and film, so the seed was planted at an early age. Almost all the people I looked up to as role models as a child were unconventional types who took the path less traveled, and I wanted to be just like them. I wanted to experience life from many different perspectives - do a lot of travel, meet a lot of creative people, sleep wherever I happen to be...that kind of thing. What probably pushed me into making the leap was getting an apprenticeship with Brent Scott (aka PD) at insex.
PD is a former Carnegie Mellon University art professor who successfully turned into sort of an anti-establishment sexual activist artist. I was fascinated by him...and still am in many ways. I had found a mentor who could not only help me advance my bondage skills, but also provide me with training on everything from photography to woodworking to artistic composition to how to judge the contents of a persons character. I simply could not resist the chance to learn from him. I would have been an idiot to pass up the opportunity, and I have absolutely no regrets to this day about that decision. I feel like I got the equivalent of several additional college courses from working along side him. At the time, insex was also generating several million dollars of revenue a year and had had like 35,000 members, so the studio could offer to pay me a full time salary on top of all that. I get paid. To learn all that. Are you kidding? The universe seemed to be setting me up and telling me it wanted me to do this thing and when the universe is involved I tend to go with it's flow as I've found arguing with it is generally a bad idea.
X
.. Christie Biel
How to search your models and what requirements must your models?.

X

.. Cyd Black
I find it to be a good idea to let models find me instead of the other way around. There is a much higher probability that a model really enjoys bondage if she goes to lengths to hunt you down and then spends 10 or 20 minutes completing a job application form on your rather extreme and artsy looking BDSM web site. That kind of behavior indicates she might enjoy bondage for real. It's not foolproof, but it helps. If the model is enjoying the bondage, the camera and the viewer will pick up on it from her involuntary body language. It's just about impossible without the help of special effects for a model to fake her way through a bondage shoot and pretend to enjoy it so convincingly that the staff and members don't notice.
I don't know why in the world a model would do extreme bondage it if they weren't personally into it...if it's about money, there are lots of easier ways to make money by having sex with people on comfortable beds and sofas rather than getting fucked outside in the freezing rain with your ass in the air and your head locked in a cage underground. Seriously, if you're contemplating something like this, it should turn you on. Like precisely what the fuck would you have to be thinking or smoking to do this otherwise?.
The ideal bondage model should be healthy, thin, flexible and should be both conventionally beautiful while at the same time having a memorable and dramatic look about her. We are not talking private play now - we are talking about making a living and whatever is considered conventionally beautiful within a particular culture sells. Ugly does not sell erotic videos. When people watch erotic videos, generally they want to see hot people and get annoyed when they see ugly people. I dont know why ugly people don't notice this?.
I even try to keep my own face off camera so I don't annoy viewers. Now I didn't design human nature or our economy or the way the Internet works so I don't want to hear any clap trap from plain looking non-conventionally beautiful or ugly people. Ugly isn't an insult by the way, it's a descriptive term when you are casting for a production. Ugly and overweight people shouldn't be touchy about getting rejected from roles in erotic productions. They should go to the casting calls for ugly and fat people, and there are plenty of them for goofy roommate, coworker and the unlikely buddy in police buddy comedies and crap. Either play the hand you're dealt, work your ass off (literally) and/or cheat and get dealt a new hand with plastic surgery.
A strong, lean dancer body type is perfect as it gives a model and crew several practical advantages during a shoot. The majority of models do not understand how physically demanding and exhausting a day of professional bondage modeling can get. Someone who does not regularly stretch and exercise will likely have sore muscles, tendons and joints the next day, perhaps to the point where she is too tired to complete the next day of shooting, whereas a model who is an active swimmer or runner will barely notice anything and be able to work several days in a row.
Pro bondage modeling is kind of an extreme sport of sorts and your body needs to be prepared for it. For example, even models who smoke cigarettes anything more than lightly can find the work challenging. The models who smoke pot, on the other hand, seem to be so physically relaxed that it somehow evens out or maybe they just smoke less overall, or are on uber healthy organic hippie diets or something. I dont know.
The ability to endure positions for extended periods of time is very important. A model who has to constantly be untied and given breaks can make a shoot last several hours longer than it needs to. Sexually, a model should be mature enough to articulate her desires and limitations and be completely comfortable with being entirely naked and prepared to engage in oral, anal and vaginal penetration while in bondage. Genuine bi-sexuality puts it through the roof but isn't necessary, but it just makes you a whole lot more versatile so there are more opportunities for you to get work.
X
.. Christie Biel
Is it difficult to find good models? Are there many girls interested?.

X

.. Cyd Black
In general, it is quite difficult to find qualified models. Even excellent ones may only want to model for a short while before moving on no matter how much money you offer them because they were never in it for the money in the first place, just for the experience. Also, there is only so many times you can shoot the same model without becoming repetitive. Many models are interested but afraid they won't be able to have a stable relationship with anyone if they continue to perform erotic work or fear what will happen if a future lover finds out what they did in their past. That makes me sad.
It's quite possible to find good people to fall in love with who are able to control their feelings of jealousy, insecurity and possessiveness, or who lack those traits entirely. Especially since we're assuming you're a super hot bondage model or porn star already, you've got a major tactical advantage when hunting for a partner, cause you're like super hot and everyone on Earth wants you. Given that, maybe pick someone who, I don't know...respects you as a person and your decisions and likes who you really are? Just a thought.
X
.. Christie Biel
What do you think is necessary to be a good professional model.

X

.. Cyd Black
Hyper-professionalism. That's because everyone assumes, by default, that an adult model is an ADHD party machine who isn't going to have her shit together and totally screw up the schedule and cost the company extra money. I didn't make the stereotype...and unfortunately, a lot of models do all sorts of crap like miss plane flights, show up hung over and cancel at the last minute after you've spent a ton of time and money promoting them and such. So responsible models, I'm afraid some of your cohorts are giving you a bad name and my best advice is that you need to overcompensate for them so you don't get stuck with their bad karma.
It's just good business - that's how you get follow on work and make friends anyway. You'll earn lots and LOTS more money and have steady work if you are friendly, polite and professional. Major bonus points for being incredibly laid back and low maintenance. Professional, reliable, hot and low maintenance all at once and you'll skyrocket to the top of the industry. If you already have the hot, lean and flexible thing down naturally, the rest is just developing a few essential business habits like reading and responding to correspondence from producers who are in the process of booking you in a timely fashion, giving plenty of notice if you have to cancel a shoot unless it's an actual emergency or you really, really, really did wake up feeling too sick to work that day. Even then I'd get a doctor's note if you want them to actually believe you. Just being honest.
Qualified, reliable models are so hard to find they are like unicorns so if you find one talk her into marrying you right away. Models who behave professionally on set also get referrals to other producers and even more work and MORE money. It's not like it's going to cramp their style much. No one expects models to behave in their private lives, and in fact, everyone generally likes it a whole lot more it when they misbehave, hit the sauce and dance on tables with their clothing all wet and half falling off. You can even rock it Courtney Love style and just sober up to do gigs here and there like she records studio albums sober once in a while. I think she was sober for those albums anyway. Honestly, I don't know. I haven't recently checked her current sobriety status recently.
X
.. Christie Biel
What advice would you give for the girls interested in working as models of bondage?.

X

.. Cyd Black
Easy. Find some established bondage models who are actively working with multiple producers. Hit them up on Facebook or FetLife or Twitter or whatever and ask them who they would recommend. Get at least a few references before you decide to work for an individual. Not because they might be a serial killer or any such nonsense, but mostly because there's a lot of ways to get injured in bondage -- even seemingly simple rope ties can cause semi-permanent or even permanent nerve damage if done wrong. That's a fact. I've seen an alarmingly high number of models come across my sets with pre-existing injuries that could easily have been avoided. Some models seem to think sustaining injuries is just an unavoidable occupational hazard. Sadly, that isn't true at all. Injuries are almost entirely avoidable if the rigger knows what he or she is doing and has practiced enough, random freak accidents aside.
I fear insex may have been a bad influence as many viewers do not realize the care that has to go into a BDSM shoot to avoid injury. We tried not to fake anything, but we did stunts with safety mechanisms and procedures and training and smoke and mirror video editing from time to time. People copy what they saw in insex and other Intersec produced videos all the time...but Intersec is mostly producing fantasy erotic entertainment, not instructional how-to videos, so just mimicking what appears on screen doesn't explain the technique we used to make it look so extreme while actually being pretty safe about it at the same tim.
Another reason to ask for and check references is that different bondage riggers have different styles and personalities. You should find one who has a style and personality you think you would like based on the responses you hopefully get back from these models. Since presumably you're already a really hot chick, considering you're thinking of a career in bondage modeling, it shouldn't be that hard to get other hot chicks to talk to you. Especially since according to the pictures I see on Facebook and FetLife you all hang out together, get trashed and have sex with each other anyway.
X
.. Christie Biel
What advice would you give to those who want to practice bondage?.

X

.. Cyd Black
There is a limit as to what can be learned from books, online sources and watching. Especially when it comes to safety and the seduction/sexuality side of things. You need to tie up real people all the time and if you want to do it professionally and get anywhere, you will likely need a mentor. If possible, find a local BDSM group that has rope classes. If one doesn't exist, then you might go to a convention where notable riggers are teaching and there is time and dungeon space set aside to practice what you've learned. You'll need a willing and flexible partner.
If you want to do it professionally, you should find a professional rigger to apprentice to. You won't be able to evolve your style and skills past a certain point without the help and benefit of other professionals in the same field working around you. You definitely won't be able to anticipate some of the more obscure safety concerns in certain situations because it takes many pairs of eyes and combined years of experience to predict nearly every problem that can go wrong before it goes wrong, and never, ever fail. Because failing doesn't just mean you screw up a shoot - failing means you injure or kill a young woman.

What has been your funniest situation you've lived in bondage?.

X

.. Cyd Black
We were in the basement of the Armory - a giant stone WWI era fortress in downtown San Francisco. My wife, Sarah Jane Ceylon, was doing a shoot with Damon Pierce as the rigger on my former Devicebondage set. I was watching and directing. Damon spent what must have been an hour affixing what looked like 200 or so clothespins up and down Sarahs inner thighs and meticulously ran a string through them to set up a zipper. Whatever he was planning looked like it was going to be fantastic.
Sarah's legs were spread wide and locked in place with metal restraints in several spots. Damon grabbed the strings and got ready to rip off all the clothespins at once. Sarah screwed up the courage to withstand what was coming. I moved my camera man into just the right spot. Then all the electricity in the building went out and the set became so pitch black that you could not see your hand in front of your face. There was a long pause as everyone realized we didn't even have a flashlight or lighter nearby and that Sarah was going to remain stuck with her legs locked wide apart for a long, long time (and at that point they had already been locked apart for a long, long time.).
Even finding the keyholes for all the metal restraints by hand would have been difficult. This was simultaneously the cause of hysterical laughter and immediate concern over Sarah's unexpected ridiculous predicament and how long she could hold out and just exactly what our next move should be - but we heard shouts that flashlights were coming around and Sarah has high endurance so it turned out all right in the end.
See now I just contradicted myself about the safety thing because I should have known to have an emergency flashlight right next to me...but then again that's one of those things that was pretty much unpredictable. The lights had never gone out before to my knowledge. This is a textbook case where having a healthy, flexible, lightweight model in good shape really saved the day. You should give yourself every advantage you can get so if an accident does happen the odds are heavily stacked in your favor that injury will not result.

What has been your most exciting meeting to consider?.

X

.. Cyd Black
Meeting my future wife, Sarah Jane Ceylon, for the first time when I came down to meet her at her car and bring her bags up to the model apartment as she arrived for a bondage shoot for insex. I got in her car to help her find a place to park and I think I probably fell in love with her before she turned the engine off. In addition to doing erotic modeling and stripping, she was attending the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and is a talented artist in her own right. That was a really exciting meeting. Meeting pd for the first time was, of course also exciting. Most recently, I met Michael Manning, who is one of the most talented and prolific erotic illustrators alive, or in recorded history, for that matter. He was gracious enough to show me his studio and his work and I thought that was very nice of him.
X
.. Christie Biel
Which is the strangest question that they have asked you, about bondage?.

X

.. Cyd Black
One man asked me if we really roasted a girl alive on a spit over a fire at the Insex farm and killed her. He really didn't seem to understand that it was a stunt like when people get into scary situations in horror movies but like, it's not really dangerous because it's a fantasy production and all the actors are just fine. I'm not sure if he understood.
Some idiot, and I don't go around calling too many people names, but this one Fucking Idiot asked why I hate women so much and somehow seemed certain that I did, aside from never having met me or spoken to any of the women I worked with. I wanted to put him in a room with five intelligent and articulate masochistic women I know and let him deal with them, except that would either be doing him far too much of a favor or the women might actually beat the shit out of him and then that would be all my fault or more likely the jackass would be so arrogant as to presume the women don't have free will and a right to follow whatever gives them bliss and wander home with his head just as firmly planted up his ass as it was when he arrived.

What do you consider essential in bondage?..

X
.. Cyd Black
Ideally, the bondage should be restrictive enough that it makes the model feel that she is totally helpless and under your complete control. Whenever you're not specifically using a model's mouth for something else, she should be tightly gagged. Sensory deprivation can be even more fun, although I prefer it more in private play than shoots because it generally obscures the model's face and I like to see faces.
X
.. Christie Biel
To what would you say always "not" in bondage?..

X

.. Cyd Black
Don't violate karma. Don't do anything to someone in bondage that violates their trust or hurts them in a way they don't want to be hurt. Unless the model shows up with pre-existing body modifications and specifically requests more, don't add any of your own. Why? Too many models end up deeply regretting them later on when they are like moms and such. Tattoos are one thing but seemingly self inflicted scars can really make it difficult for a model to make a living down the line and really turn off or scare off most other people and employers. Personally I find the little white tell tale scars on the arms of women who were cutters when growing up to be really, really hot. My wife has them. They played no small part in instantly grabbing my attention. The thing is before you mark up someone with perfect skin, you have to seriously consider the person's life situation and whether or not that kind of thing is really appropriate for the long haul and the risk/reward or cost/value or whatever you know what I mean ;).
Don't do anything dangerous bondage wise under the influence of alcohol or drugs. For example, don't attempt a suspension while either party is drunk or high. Why? Because the bottom might be too messed up to tell you or notice if he or she is getting injured and even if you've managed so far, you will eventually fuck up sooner or later and cause injury and no one is going to have any sympathy for you. I'd suggest you avoid rigging in the dark with loud music playing. Have at least either light OR quiet, but you should be able to instantly determine, at all times, if your model is in distress and I've seen many situations in loud dark clubs where a bottom was in distress and trying to communicate with the top but the top was too distracted, couldn't hear or couldn't see. Not hearing or noticing a safeword or signal and playing through is a great way to lose a play partner.

Have you had a bad experience?.

X

.. Cyd Black
There was this one time I got chased down a street by a mob of angry drunk townies after a few friends of mine started an entire bar fight with a crowd of locals in a town we were visiting. We narrowly escaped before getting beat into the pavement in what would have amounted to something like a 20 on 4 massacre. I assume, though, you meant a bad experience with bondage?.
I've been very cautious and very lucky up to this point and so far, my bad experiences are confined to giving the accidental scrape to a model during a scene where I drag here by her hair across the studio or something...but then again I'm not sure if that counts. I mean seriously, women play field hockey and stuff and beat the crap out of each other. Some women like it rough and like to play full contact sports - they get black eyes and broken bones and huge bruises and spit their bloody mouthguards out like champs. No one freaks out when they get a broken rib on field, but somehow if they get a splinter while thrashing around naked on a porn set in orgasmic pleasure, it's a national emergency to everyone watching.

Where have you learned the Japanese language?.

.. Cyd Black
I started studying Japanese in preparation for an extended trip there. I can only read very simple children's books at the moment. I continue to study it with a combination of the Rosetta Stone Japanese software series, Kanji cards that Sarah Jane Ceylon painted me, the Genki series of textbooks and companion workbooks, about a dozen iPhone and iPad apps - Human Japanese is a great one. There's one that does timed flash card tests, tests you interactively and then scores you. Also a book called Japanese in Manga Land, which teaches Japanese through anime comics which is a fun way to learn. Japanese children's books are great. Finally, I watch an enormous amount of anime and weird Japanese movies on Netflix. I really enjoy them and it helps with listening and comprehension and reading when you see common signs and characters repeated in similar situations. Like signs and stuff.

Do you like the Buddhism and the Zen meditation?.

X
.. Cyd Black
Yes, I'm Buddhist and first started becoming seriously interested in Zen and meditation somewhere around ten or twelve years ago. It's how I stay centered with all the crazy constantly going on around me.

Do you like the animals?.

X

.. Cyd Black
I love most animals, and frequently watch Animal Planet shows and National Geographic documentaries on everything from sharks to parrots. I recently watched one called Wild China that has all these crazy animals in it that I never knew existed like this ridiculously super cute snow-panda-fox-badger combination thing and these human bird fishing teams where the fisherman work with pet ducks and get them to dive and catch fish and bring them back up to them. It's so much more efficient than fishing. The ducks are like fish seeking missiles and smart and funny too because they steal fish from the fisherman when they aren't looking and suck them down. It's crazy to watch.
Sarah and I have two dogs. I have a male Schipperke who looks just like a little black wolf and she has a female toy Pomeranian that is the very definition of the word bitch in personality as well as species and gender.

Do you like classical mythology?.

X
.. Cyd Black
I got a minor in classical mythology and took a Latin course in college. I really liked it. There was a great book.. it's called Latin Via Ovid and if I recall correctly it teaches you Latin through mythological stories. They get harder and harder so if you want to know what happens you have to learn more Latin and stuff. Same principle as the Japanese in Manga Land book. Teaches you something and makes it fun with interesting stories and illustrations so you don't feel like it's a chore.

What is your best virtue?.

X
.. Cyd Black
I don't really know as I can't easily be objective about myself but I would like to say it's compassion. I refer to my previous comments on Buddha and BDSM above for anyone who can't reconcile the two.

I don't communicate well (or much at all) in person and I have no concept of time management.

What are your hobbies?.

Finding new and interesting artwork, music and films to enjoy. Reading...sometimes. I'm kind of tired of it. At one point I was planning to become an English Professor and read a huge number of works over the course of two years to prepare for the graduate entrance exams, but then I got a job offer to work for this defense contrator and decided to take it. I read so many damn books that sometimes I just can't stand them anymore. I like assimilating information in interactive formats with feedback and such which is why I like the Rosetta Stone program and annotated software training sites like lynda.com that give you lesson files to download and follow along with as you learn. Right now I'm learning about some of the Adobe Creative Suite applications beyond Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash, Final Cut and Dreamweaver and I'm really amazed at how well done and thorough the courses are.

What do you value in a person?.

X
.. Cyd Black
Character. The ability to remain calm and make quick decisions under high stress. Ultimately, in order for me to associate with someone I really need to feel that a person is not generating any bad karma. I use karma in a completely secular, non-mystical way. I just mean I don't like it when I see people stealing, being jealous, spiteful, hateful, violent or otherwise malicious.

What still surprises you?.

How little effort or care some parents will put into raising their children and then blame television, the media, the schools, art, music and video games for their problems.

What would you consider a place to live, a book to read, and a dish to eat?..

X
.. Cyd Black
Right now I feel like building a Frank Lloyd Wright house in some cool Asian fusion style version of Falling Water and set it into the side of a mountain in Japan and moving there. Instead of a book, let me recommend another movie - Exit Through the Gift Shop - an excellent and highly amusing documentary about street art. It's also on Netflix. Bonus for watching Graphic Sexual Horror and Exit Through the Gift Shop back to back.
