Your make succesfull Shibari workshop in all the world. For example, in Delhi (India). Tell me about this experience.

X

.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
The people in New Delhi were very excited about learning shibari. It was the first time ever that a bondage workshop was held on Indian soil, so we are just as honoured to teach them as they were to have us over : The group was made up of fast learners, so we'll expect them to have made some progress when we return later this year!
Also in Athens last summer people were very eager to learn. We want people to feel at ease and trust the rope so that they will all participate. Our goal for beginners is that they learn to be creative while having a lot of fun. We stress a lot on safety too.
X
.. Christie Biel
Tell me about your workshops. How many workshops you do in a year?.

X
.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
This differs according to the demand. Up till fall 2010 we hosted monthly "RopeZensations" bondage meetings in which there always was a teaching moment, but we have put these meetings on hold for the moment, to explore a more artistic approach to shibari. The number of (private) workshops is now around 5-6 a year.

X
.. Christie Biel
When did you start your website?.

X
.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
In october 2008, Marc built it from scratch without any former webbuilding knowledge. We invested a lot of time in it but we must say we are pleased with the result :) .

X
.. Christie Biel
How did you get the idea of workshops and performance?.

X
.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
As a real bondage addict, Marc was always looking for ways to bring people together for practice, exchange and inspiration. Sometimes just for fun, sometimes for teaching or learning. We were first asked to perform in the local scene, but this quickly expanded to performing nationally and then to events all over Europe.

X
.. Christie Biel
Your make also events and bondage lessons. Do you organize many events? How many events you celebrate in a year?.

X
.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
We used to host 10 RopeZensations meeting in a year, plus one or two more elaborate bondage weekends, combined with photoshoots for those present. Now we have put RopeZensations on hold for a while and we focus on organising high-level workshop with advanced riggers in an international setting. We strive to host 2 or 3 major events ourselves. Next to that, we collaborate with others to bring shibari to their event, for instance on the first International BDSM & Fetish Fair in Brussels, October 2010, or on the Athens Fetish Ball, September 2010.
X
.. Christie Biel
Bondage lessons… workshops… events… Is this a job that really ties you down? It's necessary a lot of time to work?.

X
.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
Yes, it takes a lot of time and effort. Preparing for a show or hosting an event takes a lot of time and attention, but it is not only about tying or being present at an event. There is also the aspect of marketing and communication around our shibari work. There is not just ropes, there is also the website, social networks, and a lot of email traffic and photoprocessing. And of course you want to keep up with what others are doing, so we spend a lot of time behind the computer as well.
X
.. Christie Biel
What is "Ropezensations Bondage Night"?.

X
.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
A gathering of bondage minded people, where everyone can freely experiment and exchange shibari or bondage knowledge in a private and cosy atmosphere. So far iIt was open for all levels. The next generation of ropezensations events will be limited in numbers and more oriented towards experienced and artistic minded riggers and models.

X
.. Christie Biel
How many people work in Beshibari?.

X
.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
Basically there are two people in BeShibari. There is rigger Marc, who started BeShibari. He also takes care of most of the publicity and usually creates our events. Then there is jesss, who is Marc's regular model and life partner. She takes care of the practical side of event organising. We regularly work with model tatii, who is a close friend and is usually there to lend a hand when we do an event.
X
.. Christie Biel
How was it difficult to start with your projects?.

X
.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
For us it was not so difficult. We are very privileged to live in Antwerp, Belgium, which has Fetish Café, a place for kinky and bdsm-minded people. Marc practiced a lot of his shibari techniques there and they also offered him the opportunity of hosting the RopeZensations event. So actually we started off quite well :) .

X
.. Christie Biel
What are your memories, of the first time? Can you explain some anecdote to us?.

X

.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
Marc: I'm getting too old to recall the first memories ;-)
Jesss: the first time I was in bondage was with Marc, whom I had incidentally met at a bondage weekend held at the club of a mutual friend. I did not go there as a bondage model, I went there to help out with the organisation of that specific event. Marc and I got to know each other, found that we had a lot in common and that night Marc suspended me for the first time. This was fireworks! It felt so good and so natural to both of us, that we immediately knew that we wanted to work together - and live together as well!.
X
.. Christie Biel
How would you define bondage?.

X
.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
The act of tying up a consenting adult in a position or situation where he or she relinquishes control to the person tying...

X
.. Christie Biel
And how would you define shibari?.

X
.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
The technique of Japanese ropebondage. This is different from other styles of bondage in terms of the materials and the tying techniques. Shibari riggers mostly use ropes from natural materials like jute and hemp. They use a tying technique which is about how to aesthetically, efficiently and safely immobilising their model/subject/victim without using 'true' knots.
X
.. Christie Biel
For you, what is the difference between shibari and kinbaku?.

X
.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
There are many different opinions on this, but to Marc Shibari is about the technique of Japanese ropebondage. Kinbaku is all about interaction! The connection between the rigger and the person that is tied up during the act; how the tying affects them both emotionally. When you progress from 'just' applying technique to 'two becoming one' , reaching into the soul of your model, that is when you reach the level of kinbaku and also the level of art.
X
.. Christie Biel
Why did you decide to dedicate professionally to bondage and shibari?.

X
.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
We realised there was a demand for skilled shibari performers in the local and European scene. We were asked to perform and to teach and from there it just took flight. It is like they say: you are lucky if you can make your hobby into your work! But we do not make our living with shibari, we have daytime jobs on the side.

X
.. Christie Biel
How can, the people, contract your workshops and lessons? What is the price for your workshops and lessons?.

X
.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
People can contact us on info@beshibari.com or bookings@beshibari.com for more information on our workshops. Prices depend on the number of participants, their economical standards (for instance in India prices differ a lot from Europe) and travel expenses to give a performance or workshop.

X
.. Christie Biel
What advice would you give to those who want to learn shibari?.

X

.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
There is a lot of information available on the internet, but nothing beats learning the basics with a real teacher. There is so much that you will not grasp from a virtual learning environment - it really helps a lot to improve your skills and your sense of safety and responsibility practicing a few times with someone who is already experienced.
Some advice for riggers: never ignore a warning sign from your model. Shibari is potentially dangerous and the model's safety is literally in your hands.
Some advice for models: don't try to be tough when you are in the ropes. Shibari may hurt, but you will definitely feel the difference between a 'good' pain and a 'bad' pain. If you feel 'bad' pain, ask the rigger to adjust the ropes or to untie you, so you will not be injured.
And furtermore: it is very okay to have fun while tying! Shibari is usually regarded with a very serious attitude, tying can also be a lot of fun!
X
.. Christie Biel
Your live in Belgium. Are there many people who love bondage in Belgium?.

X
.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
There are many people practicing bondage here in Belgium. Many have been practising at the ropezensations Nights and at local bdsm parties. We are glad to notice that over the last two years, a younger generation of riggers and models has taken shape.

X
.. Christie Biel
Do you have a favorite position, of bondage?.

X
.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
Marc: No, I mostly do as I feel, let the ropes and the moment decide what happens.
Jesss: it depends on my mood and my physical fitness. Sometimes I like to hang sideways, sometimes I like to be stretched to my limits. For me it is about stamina: how long can I be in a tie, how much does it hurt, can I get out on my own… I like to be challenged a lot and I like it when Marc changes positions a lot during one session, so that I will constantly be surprised by him and the ropes :
X
.. Christie Biel
What has been your funniest situation you've lived in bondage?.

X
.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
Jesss: it was not so funny, but it was very awkward: when our shibari scene for the movie "SM Rechter" (S&M Judge) was shot, it was very close to lunchtime. So when the director yelled "cut!" everybody dropped what they were doing and ran out of the shooting room, while I was still hanging in a very difficult backward suspension, with candles dripping wax on me. So me and Marc were calling out for them to come back and help me down. Eventually the director noticed us and helped us get my feet back on the ground, while the rest of his crew had ran off to lunch!.
X
.. Christie Biel
Which is the strangest question that they have asked you, about bondage?.

X

.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
Marc: "Does it turn you on?".
Jesss: "Do you people do BDSM as well?" Somehow, many people disconnect bondage entirely from the BDSM-gamma (the B in BDSM is for Bondage). If you do "just" ropes, you are considered a sissy, since there is no whipping, no caning or horrible other torments involved. Many people do not realize that bondage and especially shibari in itself is an act of BDSM, in which all the aspects are involved: bondage, domination and submission, taking and giving away control, inflicting and taking pain, et cetera. I know many people able to take a serious beating in a BDSM-setting, who cannot stand being tied up the way Marc ties me up. Somehow it is different, but also all the same.
X
.. Christie Biel
What do you consider essential in bondage?.

X
.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
Trust in each other, sense and sensibility. The rigger should inspire trust in his model and should make his model feel safe, although he is going to push her to her limits. The model should feel able to surrender to the rigger and the ropes knowing that it may be tough, but she will feel wonderful at the end.

X
.. Christie Biel
To what would you say always "not" in bondage?.

X
.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
Alcohol and drugs. They make bad company in bondage or any other kinky play.

X
.. Christie Biel
Have you had a bad experience?.

X

.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
Marc: Copycats & uncreative people are a bad experience in themselves…
Jesss: I was in suspension once in a club situated in a barn. The suspension point was a big hook screwed into a beam that held the roof. Suddenly somebody who was looking at our performance came up to us and said "Look at the suspension point, it is unscrewing" and when we looked up, both our hearts missed a few beats, for the screw had already halfway come out of the beam! That was when we decided to abort our show, get dressed, go home and never visit that particular club for bondage again.
X
.. Christie Biel
What is your best virtue?.

X
.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
Marc: Intuition combined with a kinky mind!.
Jesss: in bondage it would be patience. In the rest of my life it would be compliance.

X
.. Christie Biel
What is your best weakness?.

X
.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
Marc: Perfectionism… not knowing when to quit.
Jesss: I tend to analyse everything and sometimes I analyse a beautiful moment to death.

X
.. Christie Biel
What are your hobbies?.

X
.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
Marc: eastern spirituality, ecology and organic food.
Jesss: apart from shibari I practice Bollywood dancing, I like gardening and solving puzzles of all sorts.

X
.. Christie Biel
How do you define yourself as a person?.

X
.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
Marc in the words of jesss: Marc is creative, intuitive and a very fast thinker. This usually gets him many steps ahead of others.
Jesss: I am a compliant and loyal person. I am usually very honest in my opinions and I have a tendency to blurt out everything that I think. This makes me charmingly spontaneous, but sometimes I can also be embarassingly blunt!.
X
.. Christie Biel
What do you value in a person?.

X
.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
Marc: honesty and straightforwardness.
Jesss: if a person has the wisdom to see when to be honest with somebody and when to just be sweet.

X
.. Christie Biel
Do you have a secret you can't confess?.

X
.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
Marc: Yes.
Jesss: No.

X
.. Christie Biel
And any secret that it can confess?.

X
.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
Jesss: then it would not be a secret anymore, would it? I don't have secrets, not anymore.

X
.. Christie Biel
What still surprises you?.

X
.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
Marc: life itself everyday.
Jesss: ignorance and rudeness. These things never cease to leave me baffled!.

X
.. Christie Biel
What would you consider a place to live, a book to read, and a dish to eat?.

X
.. Marc y Jess ............ Beshibari
Marc: Lanzarote ! we call it the island wich shall not be named, cause it touches us alone by talking about it. Any book on eastern spirituality. An organic veggie dish prepared with much love.
Jesss: I would live on the island Lanzarote, in a place where I can see the see. I would read "The Divine Romance" by Yogananda and my favourite food is everything Indian-vegetarian.
